It focuses on the entire community, boards and managers; and it explains how, together, they can face the challenges presented by the increasing number of people who are aging in place.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

 

Ellen Hirsch de Haan, Esq., is a graduate of Boston University; she received her Master’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami School of Law.

Ms. de Haan has written three books reflecting her expertise in community association issues: Boomer Shock: Preparing Communities for the Retirement Generation, Self-Management: A Guide for the Small Community Association, and A Place to Age (CAI Press, Falls Church, Va.) She also contributed a chapter, “The Most Important Corporate Law Lessons for CEOs” to Corporate Counsel—the Business Judgment/Legal Advice Dichotomy: Evolving Roles in the 21st Century, an ebook published by ExecSense, Inc.

Her articles on aging in place have been published in numerous journals including the Journal of Community Association Law, Elder’s Advisor and the Journal of Elder Law. She has also written “Housing Trends for the 21st Century” and “Litigation Involving the Developer, Homeowners’ Associations, and Lenders,” with E. Richard Kennedy.

In addition to her professional writing, Ms. de Haan has also written children’s books, including Elephants, Aardvarks and Me (Createspace.com, an Amazon company).

Ms. de Haan’s has been a leader in Community Associations Institute and its affiliate organizations for more than 20 years, serving as past president of CAI national, past president of the CAI Foundation for Community Association Research, past commissioner for the National Board of Certification–Community Association Managers (now the Community Association Managers International Certification Board) and a member of the College of Community Association Lawyers Board of Governors. In addition Ms. de Haan served CAI as a member of the national CAI teaching faculty (1994-2012) and as a contributing editor for Common Ground magazine.

Ms. de Haan has been the recipient of numerous awards for her distinguished service to CAI as a volunteer, educator, leader and author. She is a member of the Florida Bar, the College of Community Association Lawyers, the Board of Advisors of the University of Miami School of Law Institute on Condominium and Cluster Developments and the Board of Advisors for the Community Association Management Insider.

Ms. de Haan lectures, teaches and speaks throughout Florida, nationally and internationally at conferences, professional meetings, colleges and universities, as well as the National Community Association Law Seminar, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, ARDA-Florida & Suncoast CAI Chapter Resort Management Seminars. Her expertise covers such topics as aging in place; covenant enforcement; Federal Fair Housing Act issues; working with difficult people, stress management, avoiding burnout, and future trends in community associations.

Ms. de Haan specializes in the practice of community association law at Wetherington Hamilton P.A. in Tampa, Fla. She represents condominium, cooperative, timeshare and homeowner associations.
